Treat the muhurtham as “do not be late to this,” not “arrive at this.”

South Indian wedding cards are famous for printing a time like 9:28 a.m. That is not fussiness. A muhurtham is a chosen window, often computed by a family astrologer or priest from the couple’s charts and the day’s panchangam. The public rite — frequently the tying of the thaali / mangalsutra — is meant to fall inside it.

What guests should do with that time

Treat the muhurtham as “do not be late to this,” not “arrive at this.” Breakfast, nadaswaram, and seating happen before. In a Chennai kalyana mandapam or a Hyderabad function hall, gates often open an hour or more earlier.

Sit where ushers put you; the aisle in front of the dais is not a photography pit.

The morning is longer than one minute

Before the window you may see kaashi yatra jokes, jaimala or not (many Tamil ceremonies skip it), kanyadaanam, and the priest’s recitation. After the thaali, there may be saptapadi, blessings from elders, and a long receiving line. If you can only attend one stretch, be seated before muhurtham and stay through the blessings. That is the part the couple will remember you for.

Dress and food

Daytime silk is the default: sarees for many women guests, veshti or a silk shirt for men on the Tamil side; Telugu and Kannada functions are equally festive but not always full kanjeevaram. This is usually a morning, so eat the breakfast the hall is serving. A late brunch plan across town is how people miss the thaali.

Not every South Indian Christian or Muslim wedding uses a Hindu muhurtham. A Malayali Syrian Christian service follows the church; a Hyderabadi nikah follows the qazi. Read the card. If it says mass at 4:00 p.m., that is not a muhurtham.

Questions people also ask

What is a wedding muhurtham?
Muhurtham is the astrologically chosen window for the core rite — often mangalya dharanam in many Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada weddings. The invitation prints a clock time because that window is short. The rest of the morning is preparation; that minute is the rite.
Should guests arrive at the muhurtham time?
No. Arrive 45–90 minutes earlier unless the family said otherwise. If you arrive at the printed muhurtham, you may walk in during mangalya dharanam, which is the one moment you should not interrupt.
Is muhurtham the same as North Indian pheras?
No. It is a timing rule, not a set of seven fire circuits. The rites inside the window depend on the community — Tamil Iyer, Reddy, Bunt, Malayali Syrian Christian families each mean something different by “the time on the card.”
