Paper and notes used to plan wedding invitations

Indian wedding invitations are not only stationery. They are the first honest statement of who is invited to which room.

Indian wedding invitations are not only stationery. They are the first honest statement of who is invited to which room. Send them early enough that outstation uncles can book trains, and precise enough that a colleague does not arrive at the Anand Karaj when you meant the reception.

A timeline that survives real families

  1. When the city and weekend lock: send a save-the-date to anyone who must travel. A plain message is enough.
  2. 8–10 weeks before: finish the two lists (ceremony vs reception) so you do not print the wrong insert.
  3. 6–8 weeks before: post or hand-deliver printed cards. Overseas guests needed the save-the-date long before this.
  4. 3–4 weeks before: WhatsApp the same information with a live map pin and a phone number that will actually be answered.
  5. 10–14 days before: a reminder only to people who have not said they are coming, not to the entire biradari.

Print vs phone

Printed cards still matter for elders, office bosses in smaller cities, and anyone whose family will put the card on a fridge. Digital cards are enough for most friend groups if the design is readable on a mid-range Android in daylight. A video invite that hides the address until the last frame is not readable.

If you use a guest portal later — WedTrix Atithi is ₹10 per guest, minimum ₹299 and maximum ₹4,999 — the invite can carry a personal link. The paper card should still stand alone. Not every elder will open a link.

What people get wrong

  • One card that lists mehendi, sangeet, wedding, and reception when the person is invited to only one of them.
  • No map pin, only a farmhouse name that Google will not find.
  • A time that is “family time,” two hours before the time printed for guests, with no note. Tell guests the time you want them in the seat.
  • English-only cards for a family that will need a Tamil, Hindi, or Punjabi line for the elders.

Questions people also ask

When should we send Indian wedding invitations?
For a wedding with outstation or overseas guests, send a save-the-date as soon as the city and weekend are fixed, then post or hand the formal card 6–8 weeks before the first function. Local-only guest lists can live with 4–6 weeks. Peak wedding season plus India Post speed is why people start earlier than they think.
Is a WhatsApp invite enough?
For friends, often yes — if it includes venue pin, dress note, and which functions they are actually invited to. Elders and formal biradari still expect a printed card or a hand-delivered box. Many families do both.
What must be on the card?
Whose wedding, both parents’ names if that is your custom, date, time, venue with a map pin, and which events the recipient is invited to. If ceremony and reception have different guest lists, print two cards or two inserts. Do not make people guess whether they are invited to the pheras.
