# Muslim nikah in India: what the ceremony is, and what guests should expect

> The point is a contract: offer, acceptance, mehr, witnesses, and a qazi who knows the family is not inventing the form.

A nikah in India can last twenty minutes in a drawing room or an hour in a decorated hall. The length is not the point. The point is a contract: offer, acceptance, mehr, witnesses, and a qazi who knows the family is not inventing the form.

## The pieces you will hear named

- Ijab and qabul — the proposal and the acceptance, spoken clearly, not mumbled under music.
- Mehr — the obligatory gift from groom to bride, agreed before the sitting. It is her right, not a prop.
- Witnesses — typically two adult Muslim witnesses, though families follow the school of law they asked the qazi to use.
- Khutbah and dua — a short sermon and prayer. Guests stay still.
- Nikahnama — the written contract. Keep copies. Couples who later need civil registration will want this paper.

## Mosque, home, or hotel

A mosque sitting is the quietest: shoes off, modest dress, phones down. A home nikah is often the most intimate; do not bring a camera crew unless asked. A hotel nikah may look like a reception that starts early — still treat the contract minutes as a rite, not a programme item between performances.

## Guest etiquette

Dress modestly. In many families that means covered shoulders and a longer hem; in others a festive but conservative suit is enough. Greet the hosts, sit where you are shown, and do not walk across the couple while the qazi is speaking. Gifts can wait until the walima if that is when the family is receiving them.

> Schools of law and community custom (Sunni Hanafi practice is common in large parts of North India; other families follow different fiqh) change details. This page is guest literacy, not a fatwa. The qazi in the room is the source.

## Civil registration

A nikahnama is not always the only document a bank or passport office will accept. Complete whatever civil registration your state requires. Store the scanned nikahnama with the rest of the wedding file so it does not live only on one phone.

## Questions people also ask

**What happens in a nikah ceremony in India?**

A nikah is the Islamic marriage contract. In the presence of a qazi and witnesses, there is an offer and acceptance (ijab and qabul), agreement of mehr, and recitation of prayers. The walima or reception is a separate celebration and may be another day.

**Do guests need to sit separately?**

Many Indian Muslim weddings still seat men and women in different sections, especially if the nikah is in a mosque or a conservative family home. Hotel nikahs vary. Follow the ushers, not your last wedding in another city.

**Is the nikah the same as the reception?**

No. The nikah is the contract. The walima is the public feast traditionally hosted by the groom’s side. Some urban families collapse them into one hotel evening; the legal and religious act is still the nikah, not the cake.
